A swiftlet builds its nest
deep inside a cave, where no light reaches.
In the quiet dark,
one bird draws a single thread out of itself,
and weaves — night after night — a white nest.
This machiya in Gion, too,
was built with that birthplace in mind.
Duck under the curtain, and it is dim inside.
Wait a moment, for your eyes to adjust.
Beyond that,
is where BI-SU begins.
In the dark,
the nest is woven.
One thread, night after night
A swiftlet weaves a single nest from nothing but the thread it spins from its own body,
night after night.
Nothing added, nothing mixed in.
Only the thread born from its own body.
White, almost translucent,
this nest has long been called the white jewel.
What BI-SU brings you,
is this natural swiftlet’s nest, and nothing else.
We made the place where the nest is born.
Not just another beautiful shop
among the machiya of Gion.
What we wanted to make
was a place to touch BI-SU’s origin.
Where the swiftlet builds its nest —
deep in a cave no light reaches.
Duck under the curtain, and it is dim.
The earthen walls curve gently, like a cave,
and at the far end, a single shaft of light falls in.
The same darkness where a nest is born —
quietly mirrored here, in a machiya in Gion.
The only marking — a swiftlet and the characters 美巣
No signboard. One curtain.
One street back from Hanamikoji.
There is no signboard above the door.
Just a pale linen noren against black burnt cedar —
a swiftlet and the small characters 美巣, the only marks to find it by.
It settles quietly into the streets of Gion,
easy enough to walk past without ever knowing it’s there.
Once you find the noren,
step through, to what lies beyond.
One shaft of light on the curved earthen wall
A wall that curves, and one slot of light
Kyoto earth, layered by a plasterer’s hand.
With no corners,
the wall curves gently, as if continuing into a cave.
A single shaft of light through the opening
catches each grain of earth,
and its expression shifts as time passes.
Because there is light, the darkness deepens.
That shadow, too, is part of this store’s scenery.
Looking up into the stair
Deeper, before higher
Deep in the dark,
a staircase rises to the second floor.
Look up, and an arch is cut into the earthen wall.
A faint light falls through, from beyond.
With each step you climb,
you leave the dark behind, toward the light.
And beyond it, the second floor.
Swiftlets cut into the burnt-cedar wall
Find them, if you walk slowly
Quietly, on the burnt-cedar walls.
One more, by the stone washbasin.
Swiftlets are hidden throughout the store.
They are not made to stand out.
Slow your steps and look closely,
and one by one, they reveal themselves.
How many you find
is a pleasure only for those who visit.
The courtyard garden after dark
The only bright place in the house
Walk deeper into the dark,
and suddenly, you reach a place filled with light.
A small courtyard garden, kept at the heart of the machiya.
Maple, moss, stepping stones — the season’s green, quietly catching the light.
By day, light pours in from here, deep into the house.
After dark, a small lamp is lit in the garden.
Because it sits within the dark,
this garden’s light appears all the brighter.

8.97 m across the front, 4.97 m deep — a Kyoto machiya, long and narrow, what locals call an eel’s bed.
Ground floor: the shop and the garden. Upper floor: the tea salon and bar. The further in you go, and the higher, the brighter it gets.

Try it before you take it home
On the first floor, from BI-SU’s skincare to inner care,
you can pick up each one, and choose for yourself.
Feel the texture against your skin,
take in the scent, taste the swiftlet’s nest.
There is no need to choose in a hurry here.
On a raised floor,
we set a bold concrete display block.
The room stays dim,
and the only thing lit is the product.
While looking out at the garden,
take your time, and choose the one that is yours.

At the top of the stairs,
a long counter of single-plank cypress runs along the window.
This is a place to savour the swiftlet’s nest.
By day, a tea salon — sweets and drinks made with the swiftlet’s nest.
By night, a bar, where the lights go low and you unwind at the end of the day.
You picked it up, and chose it, on the first floor.
Here, on the second, you sit down and savour it.
A time to know BI-SU with all five senses.
Sweets by day. A glass by night.
By day, seasonal sweets and tea, looking out over the garden.
When the sun goes down, the lights dim, and it becomes a quiet bar for a glass in hand.
The room changes face between day and night, but at the centre of what we serve, both times, is the natural swiftlet’s nest.
First, savour it here on the second floor. Then, downstairs, pick it up and choose it for yourself.
Take the memory of that taste home with you.
That is how this house is meant to be enjoyed.
